Doves ‘The Places Between / The Best of Doves’

DOVES-places-between-best-o2

HVNLP78
Doves
The Places Between ‘The best of Doves’
Released on 5th April 2010 on single disc CD/2 x CD and DVD

So here we are, twelve years since Doves formed in Manchester and released the Cedar Room EP on the Casino Records imprint (funded by the one and only Rob Gretton) and ten years have elapsed since Doves epochal debut, “Lost Souls” was released on the legendary Heavenly Recordings. In that time we have been privy to a catalogue of genre-warping singles and a quartet of albums that have forced writers to go back to the thesaurus in search of new superlatives. These are “The Places Between”, A multi-format best of that has cherry picked the best from number one albums: ‘The Last Broadcast’ and ‘Some Cities’, last years critically acclaimed masterpiece, ‘Kingdom Of Rust’ and their generation defining debut ‘Lost Souls’. Indeed, from number 3 hit ‘There Goes The Fear’ to the Motown thump of ‘Black and White Town’ and the anthemic morning after glow of ‘The Cedar Room’. ‘The Places Between’ has been painstakingly sequenced by Jimi, Andy and Jez themselves in the way they want you to experience their last decades work, in short this is the definitive Doves Best Of.

Furthermore, in addition to a host of B sides, rarities, and unreleased tracks that make up the second disc there is a smattering of brand-new recordings, ‘Blue Water’, Drifter (Featuring Cherry Ghost’s Simon Aldred) and the brilliant new single ‘Andalucia’.

The album comes in single disc and multi disc versions. The tracklistings are as follows:

Saint Etienne ‘Finisterre’ (Deluxe Reissue)

Finisterre-Packshot3

HVNLP74 DE
Saint Etienne
Finisterre
Deluxe Edition
+ Limited edition with DVD

Saint Etienne have announced details of the release of expanded and re-mastered versions of their album Finisterre on Heavenly. The album will be re-released as Deluxe Edition featuring the original album, an extra disc of session tracks and B-sides and extensive sleeve-notes. The limited-edition version of Finisterre also features a DVD of the film of the same name.

The albums are the latest in an on-going Saint Etienne re-issue series that has so far seen the release of Foxbase Alpha, Continental, So Tough and The Sound Of Water. They also recently released Foxbase Beta, a re-working of their debut album by renowned producer Richard X.

Finisterre was a love/hate letter to London, with its iconic image of the collapsed Ronan Point on the cover, recorded at a time of mass demonstrations against the government and just after folk hero Ken Livingstone had been elected Mayor. Alternately harsh and gentle, electronic and thrumming, it included the nu-disco call-to-arms single Action. Unreleased tracks on the second disc of the deluxe edition include the near-mythical Dr Who-sampling There There My Brigadier, and a tribute to the mysterious Aqualad who resides under the Thames, waiting for his moment to take the city back from the financiers and to open up the Post Office Tower’s revolving restaurant once again.

CD1 (original album)
1. Action
2. Amateur
3. Language Lab
4. Soft Like Me
5. Summer Isle
6. Stop And Think It Over

Doves ‘Andalucia’

Andalucia_packshot-72dpi2

HVN201
Doves
Andalucia

1. Andalucia
2. Jetstream (Acoustic Version)

To celebrate twelve years since Doves formed and to chronicle a career to inspire envy, with two Mercury nominated albums and worldwide sales of over 2 million, the band release their definitive collection, ‘The Places Between: The Best of Doves’. To coincide with this release a new single, ‘Andalucia’ will be released on 5th April

Andalucia’ was recorded in the barn in Cheshire where last year’s critically heralded ‘Kingdom of Rust’ was recorded. Much of Doves body of work is an ode to the north but this song appears to tell of warmer pastures. The song surges towards its rousing final chorus with orchestration colliding with a tender vocal from Jimi Goodwin. ‘Andalucia’ stands alongside Doves finest work and will no doubt seamlessly sits amongst classics such as ‘Black And White Town’, ‘Kingdom Of Rust’ and ‘There Goes The Fear’

Doves v Chris Watson / Birds Flew Backwards

Chris Watson

Here’s a treat; We are pleased to make available for the first time the opportunity to hear a collaboration between Doves and another of our favourite artists,Chris Watson . This is a remix that Chris has done of the song ‘Birds Flew Backwards’ from the bands last album ‘Kingdom of Rust’ . Chris is the UK’s leading sound recordist specialising in wildlife, who in a previous life, was in the band Cabaret Voltaire.

Download (Just for this week)
Birds Flew Backwards

If you aren’t familiar with Chris’s work (although if you have watched or listened to any significant natural history broadcast in the last decade you unknowingly will be) I suggest you check out his website and that of his label, Touch, where you will find some of his amazing recordings.

Also on a Doves tip, The Caught by the River website has announced that the second in their series of ornithologically themed music compilations will be going out to their members on Wednesday the 24th. This time the tracks have been selected by Jimi Goodwin (from the aptly named Doves. Once again the artwork has been done by Matt Sewell and features Jimi’s songbird of choice, the robin.

Happy Mondays ’88

Picture 10

Our man in Manchester, Mr Dave Rofe, sent me this you tube link yesterday. The heading in the e mail read “Fox ‘ead”, a nickname given to me twenty odd years ago by Bez, when, whilst sporting way too much hair, I was publicist for Happy Mondays.

I got around a bit back then and the downside of the digital boom is the amount of times the words ‘Fox ‘ead’ appear in my in box. I’m not embarrassed but I do open the link with a little trepidation knowing that someone is gonna say, “Is that really you, fucking hell!”. Well, this is one of them.
It’s an educational TV programme (up on here in two parts) that was made in 1988 to enlighten young people into the business workings of a record label as they make and release a record. So far, so what. The good bit is that the label they chose as the subject was Factory and the record they chose was ‘Bummed’ by Happy Mondays. Genius.

I’d not been in the job long, in fact ‘Bummed’ was the first record I worked (I was press guy for the whole Factory label) though I did have previous with the band as a fan (and London gig promoter) and I knew their manager, Nathan McGough, from when he managed The Bodines, a band that had been signed to Creation when I worked there in the mid eighties. A big thing to point out here is that what you are gonna watch is PRE ‘Madchester’. This is very important.

Those in the know were already aware that the the Mondays had ‘it’. Tony Wilson certainly knew that they were an important group and you can see it in the film as you follow him from recording studio to production meeting to launch party (the bit where he pretends to be interested in the production costs is funny). What struck me while watching it is how innocent things were at that time and it brought back to me just how fucking great a band the Mondays were. Look at the live footage — from Dingwalls, London — incredible. We were so lucky to have them.

A year later, as we now know, things went mental. The city was re-branded. A culture was sold and innocence got lost. It got dark and greedy and before long it got boring. The sad thing is that now the Mondays get seen as a joke turn on the revival circuit instead of a very important group. It’s probably their own fault and they probably don’t care but I do. It was a real honour to do that job and I’m proud to say I was there. Hey, I even got a nickname off of Bez!
