Fender ‘The Golden Age 1946–1970′

Basic RGB

Written, researched, photographed & designed by our very own Martin & Paul Kelly this is undoubtedly the ultimate book about Fender guitars. It celebrates iconic instruments that would change musical history forever and offers a unique look at some of the finest guitars and
amplifiers ever produced. This unique book traces the history of Fender guitars and amplifiers from
their creation in 1946 up until the early seventies – when the company’s golden age drew to a close.
It traces the history of Fender from its humble beginnings, through the rise of popular music and the
sale of the company to the mighty CBS corporation for $13.2 million in 1965. It also charts Leo
Fender and his partner Don Randall’s association with the brand for the next five years while they
remained consultants to CBS.

Leo Fender’s inventions have had a greater influence on modern music than those of any other
maker. He changed the way music was created and heard forever. In this book over 270 guitars in
every model and style are lovingly photographed and detailed by the authors, from the greatest to the
rarest – Strats, Teles and the infamous Marauder. It collects together more rare Fender guitars than
have ever been seen in one book before.

The book traces the history and influence of the company with a level of detail no other book can
rival. These vintage guitars are among the most loved and collectable in the world. Fender’s designs
are far more than simply tools with which to make music – they are part of the cultural landscape of
the 20th century and meaningful to each successive generation who experience them.
The authors have travelled the world and been entrusted with some of the most valuable and
exceptionally rare guitars on earth. The photography, layout and overall design represent their
collective vision of a holistic celebration of the Fender aesthetic, and is the culmination of their
passion and obsession with all things Fender.

The book is now available to pre-order from Amazon;

John Squire Penguin Book Covers

Ace John Squire art brought to our attention by the folk at Creative Review:

Penguin launched its Decades series this month, with five titles each representing the best novels of the 1950s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. We really liked the covers for the 1980s series, designed by a man perhaps more known for his art (and the Stone Roses): John Squire…

The plans for the series were announced earlier this year (and covered in Design Week) and are part of Penguin’s 75th anniversary celebrations. But we thought Squire’s efforts, which hit the shops this month, were so nice that they warranted a post. Squire created a series of paintings for the covers under the direction of Penguin’s Jim Stoddart.

You can view the rest of the covers for classics from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, here. They were created by Peter Blake (50s), Allen Jones (60s), and Zandra Rhodes (70s) under the art direction of John Hamilton at Penguin.

You can see the five books from the 1980s series with Squire’s covers over at the Creative Review site HERE.

& here’s a cracking Silver Columns track to download;Yes, and Dance (Silver Columns remix)

SILVER COLUMNS had already built up a cult fanbase with their first two limited edition, white label singles, but with “Cavalier” , their first “proper” release on the perennially tastemaking label Moshi Moshi, they have revealed their unexpected alter egos as Adem and Pictish Trail and are ready to go overground and take their rightful place in the pantheon of offbeat electro pop greats.

This prime club fodder runs the gamut from high energy dancefloor pop to electro and disco, composed of a battalion of synths, dizzying rush of pinballing beats, urgent keyboard lines and deceptively sweet, plaintive vocals.

JUSTIN ROBERTSON began as a DJ in Manchester and his early 90s clubs — Spice and Most Excellent — were hugely influential and cornerstones of the burgeoning dance movement. The Chemical Brothers, then students in the city, cited him as their mentor. His Rebellious Jukebox club — also in Manchester — pre-empted the Heavenly Social and the mid 90s trend for mish-mashing musical styles. In the 90s Justin generally operated under various nom de stages, the most renowned being Lionrock with whom he scored several Top 40s hits.

Justin is still working successfully in areas as diverse as techno, house, dancehall and art pop, as well as remixing the likes of The Whip, Bjork and Felix Da Housecat, compiling and mixing Harmless records brilliant Art of Acid compilation and still manages to fit in DJing all over the world.
