HVNLP89 — Folkrock

HVNLP89 — A free release from Heavenly Recordings as a little taste of what we’ve got going on at the mo. Enjoy!

HVNLP89 track listing and band info:

1. Fionn Regan — 100 Acres of Sycamore.
A sneaky preview of Fionn’s forthcoming album. Fionn signed to Heavenly for the release of his second album ‘The Shadow of an Empire’, and his third album is now ready too. ‘100 Acres of Sycamore’ is due for release in August.

2. Cherry Ghost — The Night They Buried Sadie Clay
Taken from the album ‘Beneath This Burning Shoreline’ which was released in July last year to a flurry of critical acclaim. The band took a year to dutifully stitch all these songs together. They did so in a barn on a tiny farm south of Manchester, where they sat on mattresses as they played their instruments, and put their amps on toilet lids. Finishing sessions in the early morning as the farmer headed out to milk the cows…

3. Trevor Moss & Hannah-Lou — Big Water
’Big Water’ is taken from husband & wife Trevor Moss & Hannah-Lou’s yet to be released debut album ‘Quality First, Last & Forever’.

4. Sea of Bees — Skinnybone
Sea of Bees came to our attention via a very astute American publicist who is an avid reader of Heavenly’s Caught By The River website and instinctively thought that we would appreciate the music. He didn’t actually know that he was sending it to a record label at the time but we will forever be in his debt. Skinnybone is a track taken from Sea of Bees’ debut album Song for the Ravens.

5. Sea of Bees — Wizbot (Conquering Animal Sound remix)
Wizbot is also from Sea of Bees’ debut album Songs for the Ravens; remixed here by Conquering Animal Sound.

6. LCMDF — Take Me To The Mountains (Get Well Soon remix)
Finnish sisters Emma and Mia Kemppainen have embossed on their debut LP the kind of skewed pop vision that recalls the likes of TomTom Club, Neneh Cherry and Shaun Ryder. And we love it, as do we love this remixed version from Get Well Soon.

7. James Walbourne — Songbird
Despite still only being in his late 20s James Walbourne’s musical pedigree is already an enviable one. Stints playing with the likes of The Pernice Brothers, Son Volt, Jay Farrar and The Pogues gaining him respect beyond his years. Songbird is taken from James’ debut solo album ‘The Hill’.

8. The Head and the Heart — Lost In My Mind
Taken from their self titled debut album, Lost In My Mind was also released as a single and is available on 7″ from the Heavenly Emporium.

9. Jack Joseph — Canyon Echo
A very talented singer songwriter and friend of Heavenly Recordings, we introduce you to Jack Joseph with this track ‘Canyon Echo’.

10. Edwyn Collins — Searching For The Truth
We are delighted to have Edwyn Collins with us at Heavenly Recordings. ‘Losing Sleep’ is Edwyn’s 7th solo album & has been critically lauded as his best. With collaborations from the likes of The Drums, Franz Ferdinand, The Cribs, Johnny Marr & The Magic Numbers and his celebratory live shows which stoke the soul and end in standing ovations. This is the sound of a true legend showing how it’s done.

The Head and the Heart by heavenlyrecordings

The Head and the Heart came together in the summer of 2009, during frequent visits to the open mic night at Conor Byrne in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood.

Californian Josiah Johnson and Virginia-native Jonathan Russell formed the core songwriting partnership, before adding keyboardist Kenny Hensle. Kenny, then 21, had packed up his piano and moved up to Seattle from California to pursue musical score-writing. Charity Rose Thielen, violin and vocals, had just returned from a year of studying and playing music in Paris. Drummer Tyler Williams moved from Virginia after Jon sent him the demo of Down in the Valley, relocating across states to be a part of this. Finally, Chris Zasche, was bartending at Conor Byrne and mentioned one day that he’d be happy to play bass for the nascent band. It all felt right: The Head and the Heart was born.

The band entered Seattle’s Studio Litho in early 2010 to record these songs that had been kicking and twisting in the catalytic development of their live show. Recorded by Shawn Simmons at Studio Litho and Steven Aguilar at Bearhead Studio, the band was selling burned copies in handmade denim sleeves at local shows within a few weeks.  Self-released in June 2010, the debut album helped build an impressive head-of-steam for the band through the second 1/2 of the year, gaining fans at influential Seattle station KEXP, local record shops (a consistent top 10 seller for Easy Street and the #1 album of 2010 at Sonic Boom), and venues up and down the west coast.

For the 2011 re-release of the album, Sounds Like Hallelujah has been re-recorded, live favorite Rivers and Roads has been added, and the album has been re-mastered.

Exclusive Saint Etienne 7″ Release

45box

“Saint Etienne On 45″ is to be released as a limited edition (1500 copies only) box set of six 7″ singles for record store day this Saturday April 16th.

You may be vaguely aware that both Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs are vinyl junkies and are rarely to be seen without a small 7″ shaped box when they are on dj’ing duties. To celebrate their love for their favourite format, Saint Etienne and Heavenly have teamed up to release a box set of singles that didn’t come out on 7″ the first time round.

The set will be the first of two (the second one to come out next year) that will include six 7“s — each one a Saint Etienne single not previously released on 7″ vinyl. Some (Lose That Girl and Shower Scene) are singles that were planned but for one reason or another never came out in the UK.

The set will be available to buy from Rough Trade and all good independent record outlets.

Box One contains: (Many of the B-side tracks are appearing on vinyl for the first time.)
Avenue c/w Stranger In Paradise
He’s On The Phone c/w How I Learned To Love The Bomb
Lose That Girl c/w Swim Swan Swim
How We Used To Live Pt 1 c/w How We Used To Live Pt 2
Boy Is Crying c/w Northwestern
Shower Scene c/w Aqualad

Each single carries the original artwork as it would have appeared at the time of issue, and the box (and insert) has been designed by Paul Kelly; It is quite beautiful! The pressing quality is top notch too and everything is mastering by the redoubtable Guy Davie.
