Heavenly & Caught By The River play Homegame

IMAG0762

A couple of weeks ago we (Heavenly & Caught By The River) headed up to Anstruther in Fife for the Fence Record collective’s annual & (for the time being?) final Homegame. Much like the Port Eliot festival in the summer this is a weekend & event I’ve been going to for the last few years & long for again as soon as their over, defining times of the year when everything feels just right. Normally taking place around Easter but this year a little into the Spring it marks my first weekend away after the long, & this year especially long tea time of the soul that is the British winter.

For me this is where the year begins again. To arrive in Anstruther harbour up there on the east coast of Scotland being met by the medicinal Leuchars westerly 5 decreasing 4 or 3, visibility fine, rain later, is the best. To know I’ll be spending the next 3 days nesting in the pubs & village halls of the town & neighbouring fishing village Cellardyke, listening to all things Fence related and walking off my hangover on the Fife coastal path is an added bonus, the fish and chip shops aint bad either — Anstruther Fish barUK WINNER: Seafish Fish & Chip Shop of the Year 2008/09! & yep, it really is that good.

We were honoured this year to be involved in some of the programming. A Saturday afternoon with Heavenly & friends in the Cellardyke Town Hall & a Caught By The River Sunday session in the cozy confines of the Rugby clubs social club. We fielded a superb team of culture fueller’s across the 2 days, here’s the formation;

Saturday: live music from; Jack Joseph with Eddy on guitar, Carwyn ‘Colorama’ Ellis, Conquering Animal Sound, Trevor Moss & Hannah-Lou & Kathryn Williams.

Sunday: Ivor Cutler tribute; Carwyn Ellis, James ‘Conquering Animal’ Scott, Kathryn Williams, Johnny Pictish. Poetry from William Burns. Nature disco compiled by Jeff Barrett and pre-mixed by Time & Space Machine’s Richard Norris with the afternoons proceedings hosted & excellently held together by Kieran Evans.

Places of much of our interest: The Dreel Tavern, Masonic Arms, The Smugglers Inn, Anstuther Fish Bar, Eastern Touch, Legends (Chinese restaurant by day – nightclub by night), Anstruther Town Hall, Cellardyke Town Hall, Cellardyke fishing harbour, Fife Coastal path to Creel & the right royal pop up shop / merch stall in the Murray library.

So after 8 years of hosting a Homegame in their hometown & with Johnny (Pictish Trail / Silver Columns / Fence Collective) moving over to the Isle of Eigg, they’ve decided to call it a day on the festival. However after a successful trial last September ‘Awaygame’ will be taking place again later in the year back on the Isle of Eigg. A kind of natural evolution for a label that knows how to fortify & bottle the good stuff then happily pass the bottle round.

A huge thank you to everyone who ventured up to perform over the 2 days, the performances really were something else, thanks to Nickie Divine who took these great photos at the Caught By The River afternoon on Sunday. Love & thanks to Johnny & Kenny & the whole Fence collective for doing what you do & inviting us up.

… Let me leave you with this little gem from Kathryn Williams, the Ivor Cutler cover ‘Beautiful Cosmos’, one of my highlights from the weekend …

Also on sale will be a special 7″ pressing of the Manic Street Preachers 1991 Heavenly single ‘Motown Junk’ resplendent in original artwork. The single was released on CD and 12″ only on it’s original release and these are set to be very sought after. More info…

And arriving actually on the day direct from the pressing plant will be another very limited 7” by Big Kids with a track titled ‘I’m Bored’. Big Kids being an early 90’s Liverpool band fronted by Edgar Jones and featuring the pre Zuton – Zutons & Howie Payne from The Stands. The track is stone cold killer slab of heavy fuggin Rn’B, a lost nugget finally getting the release it deserves as a Heavenly 45!

Martin is also promising to dig out a box of Heavenly vinyl rarities so you may just find a copy of what you’ve been looking for & they will also have sticks of HVNLP89 ‘Folkrock’ to give away – surely the future of all formats, the Heavenly stick of rock comes with a 10 track Heavenly download link on it … And they’re free, just don’t stick in your hardrive.

Adding sass to the smoky, sultry sounds of a bygone era, Sydney songstress Lanie Lane (pronounced “Lannie”) draws on the past and plants it very firmly in the here and now. Imbued with the spirit of Muddy Waters, channeling the class of Doris Day and sparkling with the pizzazz of The Andrews Sisters, Lanie wraps the sounds of a golden age around a voice that is as rich and warm as it is sweet.

Manic Street Preachers / Motown Junk on 7″!

web-Motown-Junk-packshot

Manic Street Preachers
1. Motown Junk
2. Sorrow 16

Available for the first time on 7” exclusively from the Heavenly Recordings stall at the Independent Labels Market on Berwick Street, 21/05/11.

Twenty years on from its original release, Heavenly Recordings issue an extremely limited 7” of Motown Junk, Manic Street Preachers’ first single for the label. 1000 copies of the single will be released to coincide with Heavenly’s involvement in the Independent Labels Market that’s due to take place on Berwick Street, London W1 on Saturday May 21st.

Never before released on 7”, Motown Junk was the opening salvo in a twenty-year career that doesn’t really need précising here. Safe to say, it sounds as frantic, as exciting and as vital now as it ever has. Four minutes of wide-eyed, unadulterated speedball rock’n’roll – this is a perfect snapshot of one of the country’s most loved bands at inception point.

The single will be available exclusively from the Heavenly Recordings stall at the Independent Labels Market on May 21st and from the merchandise stall at the Manics Cardiff International Arena gig on the same day and stock is extremely limited. Any copies remaining after May 21st will be sold via the Heavenly or Manics websites.
