The Head and the Heart
take a night off from touring with My Morning Jacket to headline their own show at The Garage in London.

After having sold out all 3 of their previous London shows this will be their biggest one to date. Tickets are priced £12.50 and are available here from Ticketweb.

The Seattle six piece came together in the summer of 2009, during frequent visits to the open mic night at Conor Byrne in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood.

HVNLP85 The Head and the Heart — The Head and the Heart by heavenlyrecordings

Californian Josiah Johnson and Virginia-native Jonathan Russell formed the core songwriting partnership, before adding keyboardist Kenny Hensle. Kenny, then 21, had packed up his piano and moved up to Seattle from California to pursue musical score-writing. Charity Rose Thielen, violin and vocals, had just returned from a year of studying and playing music in Paris. Drummer Tyler Williams moved from Virginia after Jon sent him the demo of Down in the Valley, relocating across states to be a part of this. Finally, Chris Zasche, was bartending at Conor Byrne and mentioned one day that he’d be happy to play bass for the nascent band. It all felt right: The Head and the Heart was born.

HVNLP90 — James Levy & The Blood Red Rose ‘Pray To Be Free’ by heavenlyrecordings

I love you more than music / Let it come” (“Positively East Broadway”)

Released on Heavenly Recordings under the name James Levy and The Blood Red Rose, Pray To Be Free is a romantic yet playful collection of jaunty pop and bruised ballads, imbued with stunning vocals and wrapped in a variety of velvet strings, suave horns and lush arrangements.

A great traditional rock ‘n’ roll singer songwriter record,” reckons Heavenly head honcho Jeff Barrett — and he should know, having worked with several of the best. In Levy’s case, his aim was the kind of classic Serge Gainsbourg recorded in the ‘60s with Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin, or Lee Hazlewood’s similarly charged duets with Nancy Sinatra and Ann Margret — “An older record, with a classic vibe and a contemporary, fresh sound.”

The co– vocals in this case are provided by Levy’s long time friend Allison Pierce (of The Pierces), delivering the vocal riposte to Levy’s in these sumptuous duels of love and war. “I tend to write about death and relationships, and the death of relationships,” says Levy, “but I cannot tell you why.”

Allison played an instrumental part in the making of this album, not only by choosing to cover Levy’s song Glorious with her sister, but by introducing him to Coldplay’s bassist Guy Berryman. Berryman loved what he heard and — like The Pierces own breakthrough album (You & I) – he offered to produce Levy’s album.

With the exception of Allison’s Cry Myself To Sleep, the songs on Pray To Be Free are picked from a collection of more than 50 Levy-penned tracks — some of which were originally recorded by the band named LEVY, which released two albums on One Little Indian in the mid 2000s and toured the UK alongside The Macabees. Other songs were chosen from a series of post-LEVY releases that more closely embodied the Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan spirit that James took with him when he left his native Vermont in the early Naughties for New York City. One of the premiere songwriters and performers in town, he was readily embraced by the burgeoning anti-folk scene centred around the Sidewalk Cafe, which included contemporaries like Adam Green, Kimya Dawson and Regina Spektor.

At the heart of Pray To Be Free sit some of James’ newest and most compelling compositions, including the soon-to-be-singles “Sneak Into My Room” and “Hung to Dry”. “The new songs came alive for me when I performed them with Allison,” James says. “These songs were meant to be sung as duets. There is a beautiful, knowing quality to Allison’s voice. She understands where the songs come from.” Other songs that hold a particular resonance to Levy include “Precious Age Of 13”, half-sung in Hebrew (the words come from the passage James memorised for his bar mitzvah) and the album’s finale. “I wanted to write a song like Gainsbourg but I couldn’t sing in French, so I sing in Hebrew instead!”.

James’ roots helped support him during his more recent years when he worked for a Jewish cemetery. But now, with the imminent release of Pray To Be Free and The Pierces’ success with their version Of Glorious, he has finally given up the day job. His prayers have been answered.

There’s a lovely feature on Amelia’s magazine’s site about the making of the Big Water video, Trevor & Hannah’s first attempt at stop frame animation. It was featured yesterday and gives a wonderful insight into the thinking and hard work that they put into their art.

The song Big Water gave us limitless scope, and we were soon both living vicariously through the miniature versions of ourselves, sailing the high seas and fishing. We brainstormed the storyboard for about a week, eventually getting down to frame by frame detail until we had a strict shooting list. It took about two weeks to design and make all the scenery, props and cast. Despite the rigorous planning we were still encountering problems regularly during the shooting. Walking on sand and crushed velvet, lighting a fire, moving water and clouds were among our many challenges. Our complete inexperience and lack of any training meant we were constantly having to invent techniques as we went along.’ To read more click here

And here is the wonderful video they made for ‘Big Water’. We had no idea what they were up to when the video hadn’t arrived, it was obviously taking a little longer than expected, once again joy, laughter and hats off to them respect upon delivery!

Did you see the cameo of our Caught By The River comrade John Andrews? Check out a non stop frame animation of Andrews of Arcadia online and in person every Thursday at Spitalfields market (plug for a pint please John!)

And this is the video for ‘Your Love is Forever’ which Trevor & Hannah recorded especially for Mojo magazines ‘George Harrison’ tribute covermount cd. You can download the track for free from the Soundcloud player.

Here’s introducing ‘Stealing Sheep’ to Heavenly

Stealing Sheep 2

Introducing Liverpool’s hotly-tipped psych-folk darlings and new Heavenly signings… Stealing Sheep. They create lo-fi, DIY pop in the shape of harmony drenched old time vocals, spiralling psychedelic guitars, hypnotic beats and sixties style drone synths. They started writing together in the summer of 2010 and by the end of the year were already touring the UK’s folk clubs and cafés.

Stealing Sheep began recording on cassettes and 4 tracking their first EP’s in an abandoned school in Liverpool with first time producer Joe Wills, who inspired in them experimental recording techniques in unusual locations. In February 2011 they released their first single “The Mountain Dogs” on limited 7″ vinyl with Manchester’s hug-step pop label Red Deer Club. Parallel to their single launch they toured the UK and Ireland supporting the likes of Olaf Arnalds, Silje Nes, Mice Parade and Efterklang befitting of their Scandinavian-influenced sounds.

During these tours they made a midnight pit stop at Abbey Road Studios to record their second single “I am the Rain”, which they released in May with London label Idle Fret. This won them peak time radio play from many 6music DJ’s including Lauren Laverne, Jarvis Cocker, Tom Ravenscroft and Nemone. During the summer they toured Europe and recorded an off the cuff live session with Rob De Bank at Maida Vale Live Lounge for Radio 1.

They played a number of summer of festivals including Secret Garden Party and Standon Calling, as well as industry events Sound City and The Great Escape. With continuing airplay from BBC2’s Steve Lamacq, Radio 1’s Gilles Peterson, Rob Da Bank, 6music and XFM, the band are being hotly-tipped by both radio and press.

This winter Stealing Sheep will begin recording their debut album, due for release in Spring 2012. This will be preceded by the taster EP, “Noah & The Paper Moon”, on Heavenly Records. The girls have recently supported Emmy the Great and Summer Camp, Alessi’s Ark, Tune-Yards, Beth Jeans Houghton and Slow Club…
