Marsy release ‘Magic’ a brand new single that shares their EP title, a collection of 5-songs released ahead of a run of summer shows.

Music created with sunshine on the mind, ‘Magic’ (produced by Mike Lindsay – Tunng, LUMP), undergoes a beautiful evolution in sound over an all too brief four minutes. Starting as a finger-picked campfire folk song, the track soon warps into a five-piece live band playing gloriously addictive singalong music ready to soundtrack festival tents and bright, warm days all summer long.

The 5-track EP of the same name which features previous single tracks ‘Changes’, ‘Rosé’, ‘Chance The Dancer’ and ‘Let No Other Change Your Mind’.

If modern folk music means echoes and flecks of some of the great bands of the last thirty years—like REM, Teenage Fan Club, and Bonny Light Horseman—then this, Marsy’s first EP for Heavenly Recordings, is very much a folk record.Rich with vocal harmonies that feel as though they’ve been steeped in tradition for a century or more and carried by acoustic instruments that drift in like a summer breeze, Marsy’s songs are led by Hannah Rodgers. Her plaintive voice tells timeless stories, shaped by a quiet sadness and a melodic instinct that cuts cleanly across eras.
Each of Marsy’s songs—from the stargazing glow of ‘Magic’ to the ever-unfolding fusion of voice and band on ‘Let No Other Change Your Mind’—is full of soul, just as true folk music should be. And each one lingers long after the final note fades. That is a little bit of magic.

A prolific songwriter since she was a teenager, Hannah Rodgers has always written “on my own in my room, just me and a guitar.” An exercise in catharsis and decompression, “I write from a place that’s hard to explain…it almost feels like a takeover, out-of-body.”

Having written songs continuously in the way others may keep a diary, she found herself sitting on a stockpile. “I had this backlog of songs that I didn’t really know what to do with. I’d always wanted to be in a band but I didn’t really know how to make it happen.”

Tentatively, she started sending the songs out to friends, road-testing them at small live shows, with different members “joining and leaving, coming and going” and when Rodgers hit upon the band’s current iteration, “it just sort of stuck.”
